Games

Games help you organize a match with other players: create a game, let players apply to join, add players yourself, and close the game once the list of players is final. For now, games are available only for pickleball.

What it is

A game is a list of players for one match. Signed-in users with the right to edit games can create a game. The organizer approves the players who apply, or adds players directly, and closes the game when the list is final.

Games are part of “Games & Partners”. This section has two tiles: “Game calculator” and “Find a game”. Everyone sees both tiles, including guests.

How to open it

Open “Games & Partners”

On the home page, click the “Games & Partners” tile.

Choose a tile

  • “Game calculator” opens the game calculator.
  • “Find a game” opens the game search. It shows all games, including private games and the games where you are the organizer or a player.

To see games, sign in. If you are not signed in, the search pages show the invitation “Play with partners” and the “Sign in or register” button instead of the games.

Find a game

The search has two modes: quick search and advanced search. Both show the games as cards. On a wide screen the cards are arranged in three columns; on a narrower screen there are fewer columns. Games are listed in order of start time.

Quick search starts with a sport step. Choose a sport to show only its games. If you do not choose a sport, the cards of all games are shown.

Quick search lists open games only. To find closed games, use advanced search.

At the top of the page, the link “Looking for a specific game?” opens the advanced search.

Game cards

Each card is one game. It shows:

  • the date tile: the day, the short month and the weekday, with the start time under them;
  • the name of the game, with the game type under it, for example “Private”. A closed game also shows the “Closed” label with a lock;
  • the organizer: a small avatar and the organizer’s name, marked “Organizer”. The organizer is shown when the name is known;
  • the sport name with its icon, and the rating label: “Rated” with a trophy for a rated game, or “Unrated” for an unrated game;
  • up to five avatars of players. If more players have joined, “+N” shows how many others are in the game;
  • the seats: for example “3 of 4 free”, with a bar that fills up as the seats are taken.

Closed games appear faded.

Click a card to open the game.

Create a game

The “Create game” tile is the first tile in the grid on both search pages. Users who may not create games see the tile with a lock and the message “You don’t have permission to create games” instead of the button. Guests see the sign-in invitation instead of the grid.

Click “Create game”

The “New game” window opens.

Choose a sport

Open “Sport” and choose a sport. Pickleball is the only sport for now. The first sport in the list is selected by default.

Name the game

Type a name of up to 255 characters in “Game name”. The field is filled in for you with “Game, {date}”, for example “Game, 26 Oct”, where the date is the start date of the game. The name follows the start date until you type your own name. The name cannot be left empty.

Add a description (optional)

In “Description (optional)”, write up to 255 characters about the game. The description is shown on the game page.

Choose the start

Under “Start”, pick the “Date” in the calendar. Days before today cannot be picked. Then set the “Hour” and the “Minute” with the − and + buttons. The minute changes in steps of 5. When the window opens, the start is set to the current time.

Set the number of players

Under “Players”, set how many seats the game has. The default is 4. Enter a whole number from 1 to 32767.

Choose the game type

Click one tile: Private, Public, Tournament or Training. The chosen tile has a check mark. Private is selected by default.

For now the type is only a label. It is shown on the game, but it does not change how the game works.

Choose rated or unrated

Under “Rated game”, click “Unrated” or “Rated”. Unrated is selected by default.

The hint under the tiles says: “Only participants who have completed the self-assessment questionnaire can be added to a rated game”. See Rated games.

Click “Create game”

The button shows “Creating…” while the game is being created. The game page opens when the game is ready.

To leave without creating a game, click “Cancel”, the close button (×) or press Esc.

Games cannot be deleted. Check the sport, the type and the rating before you create the game. The rating cannot be changed after the game is created.

The game page

The game page opens when you click a card or create a game. It shows:

  • the header: the game name; the game type; the rating label (“Rated” or “Unrated”); the status (“Open” or “Closed”); the start date and time; the seats, for example “3 of 4 free”; the description, if the organizer wrote one. For a rated game, a hint explains who can be added;
  • the “Players” list. It shows the names of the players who hold a seat, not their email addresses. A player without a name is shown as “Unnamed player”. If there are no players yet, the list says “No players yet”;
  • the participation panel, if you are not the organizer. It shows the button “Apply to join” or the status of your own application (see Apply to join);
  • the management controls, if you are the organizer (see Manage players and Join requests).

To go back to the games, click “Back to games” at the top of the page.

Guests see the text “Sign in to view the game” and the “Sign in or register” button instead of the game.

Apply to join

Any signed-in user who is not the organizer can apply to join an open game. Open the game and click “Apply to join”. The button is shown only if you are not in the game yet and the game is open. A closed game has no “Apply to join” button.

After you apply, the game page shows the status of your application:

  • “Application sent — waiting for the organizer”. Your application waits for a decision. To cancel it, click “Withdraw application”. An application does not take a seat.
  • “You are in this game”. The organizer approved you, and you hold a seat. You are in the “Players” list, with “Leave game” next to your name while the game is open.
  • “The organizer declined your application”. You cannot send a new application to this game.

If the game has no free seats, the page shows “The game has no free seats” and your application is not sent.

In a rated game, you must first complete the self-assessment questionnaire. See Rated games.

Join requests

A join request is an application from a user who wants to join an open game. It works like this:

  • The application waits until the organizer decides to approve or decline it.
  • Only an approved player takes a seat. A pending or declined application does not take a seat.
  • An application cannot be approved if all seats are taken.
  • The decision is final. An approved or declined application does not change.
  • A user whose application was declined cannot send a new application to that game.
  • A user can withdraw their own pending application. A declined application stays in the organizer’s list, and the user cannot remove it.
  • While the game is open, the organizer can add a player directly. A player added by the organizer is accepted at once and takes a seat.
  • Only the organizer sees all applications. A user sees their own application and the approved players, but not other users’ applications.
  • After the game is closed, pending applications can no longer be approved or declined.
  • In a rated game, a user must have completed the self-assessment questionnaire for pickleball before applying.

Review applications (organizer)

The organizer sees the “Applications” section below the “Players” list. It shows:

  • the pending applications, each with “Approve” and “Decline”;
  • the declined applications, each with “Remove”. Click “Remove” to take a declined applicant off the list.

If nobody is waiting, the section says “No pending applications”.

The section is shown only to the organizer with the right to edit games, and only while the game is open.

Manage players

Only the organizer can add or remove players, and only while the game is open. The organizer also needs the right to edit games. The management controls appear next to the list on a wide screen and below it on a narrow screen.

Add yourself

Click “Add me”. The button is shown only if you are not in the game yet.

Add a player from the portal

  1. In “Add a player”, type at least 2 characters of the name in the “Search for a user” field. The hint under the field says “Enter at least 2 characters”.
  2. Click the user in the results.

Users who are already in the game are not shown in the results. If nobody matches, the list says “No one found”.

Close a game

Click “Close game”

The organizer clicks “Close game” in the management controls.

Confirm

A window asks “Close the game?”. Click “Close” to confirm, or “Cancel” to go back.

Closing a game cannot be undone. A closed game cannot be opened again, and its list of players cannot be changed. The status changes to “Closed”, and pending applications can no longer be approved or declined.

Rated games

A rated game accepts only players who completed the self-assessment questionnaire for pickleball.

  • Adding a player without the questionnaire does not work. The page shows: “This player has not completed the self-assessment questionnaire for this sport”.
  • Approving an application without the questionnaire does not work. The page shows: “Cannot approve: the player has no questionnaire for this rated game”.
  • Applying or adding yourself without the questionnaire. The page shows “To play in a rated game, first complete the self-assessment questionnaire for this sport” and the “Complete the questionnaire” button. After you submit the questionnaire, the action you started is completed automatically.
  • Changing the questionnaire during an open rated game is not allowed. While your application to an open rated pickleball game is pending, or you have been accepted into such a game, you cannot change your self-assessment questionnaire for this sport. The page shows: “The questionnaire cannot be changed while your application to an open rated game for this sport is pending or you have been accepted into such a game.”

You can change the questionnaire again after you leave the game, withdraw the application, or once the game is closed. A declined application does not block changes.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the games I am in?

Open “Games & Partners” on the home page, then click the “Find a game” tile. The list shows all games, including the ones where you are the organizer or a player. Quick search shows open games only. To see closed games too, use advanced search and choose “All” or “Closed” for the status. If you are not signed in, sign in first.

Why don’t I see a game I want to join?

The list shows all games, including private ones. Quick search and advanced search show open games only, until you choose “All” or “Closed” for the status in advanced search. If the game is closed, you cannot apply to it.

Why do I see an invitation instead of the games?

You are not signed in. Click “Sign in or register”. The game page shows the same button.

Why don’t I see the “Create game” button?

Creating games requires the right to edit games. Without it, the tile shows a lock and the message “You don’t have permission to create games”.

Why don’t I see “Apply to join”?

You may be the organizer, the game may be closed, or you may already be in the game. If you have applied or you are in the game, the page shows the status of your application instead.

Why don’t I see “Add me”, “Add a player” or “Applications”?

Only the organizer who has the right to edit games sees these controls, and only while the game is open. The “Add me” button is also hidden if you are already in the game.

Can I ask to join a game?

Yes. Open the game and click “Apply to join”. The organizer then approves or declines your application. See Join requests for the rules.

Can I withdraw my application?

Yes, while it is pending and the game is open. Click “Withdraw application” on the game page.

Can I leave a game?

Yes, while the game is open. Click “Leave game” next to your name. You are removed from the list right away.

Can I change a game after I create it?

You can change the list of players while the game is open. In this version there is no way to edit the name, the start time, the number of players or the game type, and the rating cannot be changed after the game is created.

Can I reopen a closed game?

No. Closing a game is final.

Can I delete a game?

No. Games cannot be deleted.

What is not available yet

In this version, you cannot add guests or pairs, open a public page for a game without signing in, or play matches and record a score. A game has no price and no commercial flag. These features are planned for later stages.

  • When a player leaves or is removed, the player disappears from the list. In a later stage, a player who has already played matches in a game will stay in its list as disqualified instead.
